La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, como órgano principal de discusión, consenso y representación, de los 193 estados que conforman a la Organización, se encarga de realizar las deliberaciones sobre las temáticas fundamentales que dirigen la actuación de este organismo internacional.
En el Colegio Rochester, realizamos la simulación de trabajo que se realiza en la Asamblea a través de la demostración y desarrollo de habilidades útiles para la vida. Nuestros estudiantes de Bachillerato, a través de este ejercicio académico, exponen y evidencian competencias como: LIDERAZGO (Secretaría General y Presidencia de Comités), LETRARSE, ESCUCHAR CON EMPATÍA, INFORMARSE ÓPTIMAMENTE, RELACIONARSE, al trabajar en la investigación que fundamenta la elaboración de sus perfiles de Delegación, Papeles de Posición y Resoluciones; al elaborar argumentos para participar en la defensa de sus posiciones en los debates; al interpretar y comprender las posiciones de sus compañeros para llegar a acuerdos, consensos y negociar las necesidades de sus Delegaciones; al aplicar protocolos de comunicación, solicitud de información y de trabajo en equipo. Asimismo, se evidencia la labor de nuestros estudiantes para ser SISTÉMICOS COMO CIUDADANOS y su capacidad para RESOLVER PROBLEMAS REALES al debatir sobre temáticas contextuales y contemporáneas, lo que pone de manifiesto la intención de nuestra institución de fomentar una ciudadanía global.
En RMUN XVII Formando el futuro, reconocemos el espacio que tenemos para poder fomentar e incentivar el desarrollo de habilidades y valores para construir una ciudadanía informada, deliberante*, participativa y ética, que tenga en cuenta el bien común y las particularidades identitarias** que reconocen la diferencia y la multiculturalidad de nuestro planeta; e invitamos a todos los estudiantes a realizar la mejor ejecución de sus roles, a involucrarse y a empezar a construir sus futuros deseados.
* deliberante: Que toma por mayoría de votos acuerdos que trascienden a la vida de la colectividad con eficacia ejecutiva.

I want to welcome all of you to the Rochester United Nations Model, 2022. This year, we celebrate our XVII version, and it is with pride that after 2 years of having hosted virtual models, we go back to the classrooms, the hallways and the buildings, where the beauty and the magic takes place.
We are positive that RMUN is a synonym of the joy of learning. It is through every one of the activities that is planned, since the portfolios to the debates, that learning is developed with excellence in mind. We know that the journey is not easy; but in fact, bringing something to existence is not an easy task. I want to congratulate the Secretary-Generals: Sofía Granados, María Alejandra Salamanca y Carolina Abaunza for making sure that dreams can come true. Einstein once said, “the value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving”. Generosity is key to adding value to what one does: generosity of time, generosity of knowledge, generosity of commitment, generosity of spirit, to mention a few.
We encourage each of you, delegates, presidents, and Secretary-Generals to be a person of Character: A person who works hard, satisfies his/her needs letting others satisfy theirs as well, takes into account himself, others and the context, respectfully expresses his/her points of view, supports peers and the community in a way in which we are all taken care of, and above all, a person of character is a person who stands for his/her values and chooses to be kind.
The United Nations was created after two devastating World Wars and its main goal was and continues to be to act collectively for world peace, preventing conflicts of any kind among nations. Now, it is your turn, especially in these troubled moments of conflict we are witnessing around the world. We hope you choose peace over war, seek for understanding rather than attack another country, respect others’ ideas and arguments rather than disqualifying others’ perceptions, support each other rather than threatening those who hold different beliefs. As Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, said “To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.” We truly hope that you stand for peace and protect the world in which we live in for the benefit of future generations.
