The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the global Agency dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. [About Us: UNHCR. Retrieved from: https://www.unhcr.org/about-us.html]. The committee’s head office was instituted in 1950 in order to counteract the crisis that the millions of Europeans fleeing the continent represented for the international order as a cause of World War II. The UNHCR was meant to complete its tasks in three years and then disband, but as it is evident: the Agency’s work is far from done. It was after the mid-50’s Hungarian Revolution that the High Commissioner’s office became vital for overseeing territorial security and human rights preservation, and its efforts forever shaped the way humanitarian organizations would deal with refugee crises in the future.

The UNHCR range of action nowadays covers 132 countries, with more than 17,500 personnel and an annual budget of more than US$8.6 billions.
